Being just a stone’s throw away from the largest city on the Australian continent means that Newcastle has to be better in many ways in order to compete against the bigger city (Sydney) to the south. Newcastle has a lot to offer travelers coming to the city, from historic sites to the great outdoors and even water based activities. However, as with all travel, the issue of transportation is bound to come up.
Thankfully, there are several options available to travelers coming into Newcastle. The most economic is, of course, public transportation. However, this severely limits the mobility and flexibility of the traveler and many people are opting to hire a car instead. This is made extremely easy by the five on site (at the terminal) car rental companies and the various others that offer rentals and even limo services around the city.
It is always recommended that you reserve your car before you land so that you know it will be there and ready for you to start your get away. However, because of the amount of rental companies at the Newcastle Airport and those that are scattered around, it is possible to generally get a vehicle on short notice. The prices will vary from person to person, but in general they are very competitive with each other and will be able to accept most drivers. Another advantage to renting a car here is that if you want to travel to nearby Sydney for a day or two, you won’t have to go out of your way and be packed into a mass transit vehicle to do so.
