I let my partner talk me into going to Newcastle on business with him. I imagined myself sitting in a nice room looking out over dense industry and seeing a polluted skyline. So I said yes anyway, you know it’s always nice to go away! I was very pleasantly surprised when I actually saw what Newcastle had to offer. Some of Australia’s best know beaches including; the world famous Nobbys beach are right there, all of Newcastle’s best six beaches are within five kilometers of the city. Some of these beaches have ocean baths, but there are no stingers to worry about like in some of the northern Queensland beaches.
Newcastle is located around a working harbor. Take in the sights of this industries water world while enjoying harbor side cafes and fine dining. At the entrance to Newcastle harbor is the Nobbys Lighthouse. Take a picnic to some of the parklands by the harbor. There is so much more than you would expect to find. The city centre has some good shopping and good eating too, lots of local seafood to enjoy. While organizing the business trip we used carhirenewcastle.com.au. We don’t worry about which car rental company we use; we just need a good quality late model hire car that suits our needs. With carhirenewcastle.com.au we were able to compare companies and prices on the one page. The rental company we went through offered us a chance to pay extra on our insurance to lower the excess, if anything was to happen, we had good insurance coverage. We were able to pick up the care at the Newcastle Airport and head straight to the hotel we had organized. Next time I go on business but have none to do I’ll make sure I do a bit more homework and find a few more gems around Newcastle.

In 1828 an earthen hill was built to protect the New South Wales northern coastline from attack, the hill was named Fort Battlesticks and was eventually handed to the army in 1843 had its first name change to Signal Hill. As time passed a permanent facility was built and the name changed to Fort Scratchley, after Lieutenant Peter Scratchley who did the planning for the permanent Fort. The first guns were mounted in 1866 to protect the Harbor entrance into Newcastle. It was in 1942 that the fort saw action when Newcastle was attacked by a Japanese submarine vessel, which it was able to repel.
Fort Scratchley is a good example of a 19th century fort complex in New South Wales. The fort is located at the eastern end of Newcastle, the site of Australia first coal mine made by convicts in 1801. Fort Scratchley is open to visitors 6 days a week, being closed each Tuesday. Admission to the Fort is free and visitors can take themselves on self guided tours. Guided tours are available, check prices on the Newcastle City Council website. The Fort Scratchley Historical Society operates the guided tours and gift shop. The site has a multi purpose center with modern facilities. Smaller functions can be held in the old barracks, which were the permanently placed soldiers’ accommodation, built in 1886. Both buildings have harbor views.
