During the war back in 1944 there was only one city in the south of Australia that fired defensively at the Japanese. There was a Japanese mini submarine that was offshore the coast of New South Wales which was taking shots at Newcastle which is a town north of Sydney. There were gun emplacements in Newcastle that were able to shot back at the attacking submarine. The base was Fort Scratchely which had been built in 1886 as a fear from foreign attack.

It is still one of the many tourist attractions that people drive to Newcastle to see which a part of the history of Newcastle is. There are many more attractions that are available to the public like this particular heritage sight. There is also the lighthouse at Nobbys Headland which is a fantastic walk and a great place to take a few snap shots.

Newcastle is famous for is sea baths which are giant pools where the fresh sea water enters the pool naturally.
